Why We're Called Pedal & Shift

A note from Ian Froude, Pedal & Shift’s Managing Director and Founder

As an engineer, I’m naturally curious about systems: how they’re built, why they work, and where inefficiencies can be minimized. That curiosity shapes how Pedal & Shift works with technical companies and project developers in the energy sector, and the philosophy behind our name.

We found our inspiration in the humble bicycle: a masterpiece of human-powered engineering that turns every rotation of the pedal into forward motion with remarkable efficiency.

Pedal: the discipline of forward motion

“Pedal” is the foundational work. It’s the consistent, deliberate effort that creates momentum. Just as a cyclist has to push down to overcome inertia, businesses have to apply continuous, purpose-driven action to reach their goals. We help them do this by putting our feet on the pedals, using our industry networks and systematic approach to drive growth.

Shift: the intelligence to adapt

“Shift” is the strategic thinking required to navigate a changing landscape. A cyclist doesn’t use the same gear on a steep climb as they would on an open, flat road. They shift, adjusting to match the terrain. That same adaptability shapes how we think about strategy: curiosity about where the terrain is changing, and advice on where to adjust.

Our approach

Pedal & Shift reflects how we work. We bring an engineer’s curiosity to every client relationship, and to the industries we work in. Whether working with a growth-stage company, an established organization or a bigger commercial presence, we work alongside your team to pedal forward, and shift together when the terrain changes.
